The 1941 GMC Jimmy: From WWII Military Truck to Street Food Icon

Long before it became the home of Killa Waffles, the 1941 GMC "Jimmy" truck had a very different mission.

Originally built during the Second World War, the vehicle was designed to transport soldiers, supplies and equipment across some of the most challenging terrain imaginable. The GMC CCKW, commonly known as the "Jimmy", became one of the most recognisable and reliable military trucks used by Allied forces. This particular truck served in France during WWII before being transferred to the United Kingdom in the 1970s.

Decades later, the truck found a completely new purpose.

When Killa Waffles was founded, the goal was never simply to run a food truck. Founder Alex Gaffke wanted a vehicle with character something that told a story before a single dish was served. The historic Jimmy truck was the perfect match: distinctive, powerful and impossible to ignore.

Carefully preserved and repurposed, the 1941 Jimmy now operates as the mobile kitchen behind Killa Waffles’ award-winning fried chicken and waffles. The truck regularly appears at street markets, food festivals and special events, where it has become a recognisable part of the brand’s identity.

Today, the Jimmy carries a different kind of cargo crispy fried chicken, golden waffles and bold flavours that have helped Killa Waffles build a loyal following and gain national recognition, including a win on the BBC television competition Britain’s Top Takeaways, where the brand was crowned Best Chicken in the UK.

Wherever the Jimmy parks, it attracts attention not only for its history, but for the food it now serves.
